NOAA Storm Events files dated September 18, 2026; newest event June 6, 2026. Events are added weeks after they happen, so the current year is always incomplete.

Metro Hail By Year

A report is one observation sent to the National Weather Service; one storm produces many. Hail days count distinct calendar dates with a report anywhere in the nine counties, which is the number to read.

Which Counties Get The Most Hail Days?

Tarrant and Denton counties lead the average, and Rockwall trails. The table counts a day once per county, so the same storm shows up in every county it crossed. Average days are for the full years 2010 to 2025; totals run to June 6, 2026.

What The Numbers Do Not Say

A hail report is an observation, not a damage claim. The file holds no loss amounts, no roof ages and no insurance outcomes, so it cannot tell you whether a given storm damaged a given roof. It also says nothing about the quality of any roofer. What it does show is exposure: in a typical full year some part of the metro sees hail on about 18 separate days, and in 16 of 16 full years at least one stone of 2 inches or more was reported. Across those years the metro logged between 2 and 74 such reports a year.

What This Means For Your Roof

Inspect after the storm day your address was under, not after a knock on the door. The hail and storm damage ranking lists the companies on our roster that publish storm restoration as a service. Before you file, run the arithmetic: the hail claim calculator weighs a deductible against a repair estimate, and our chapter 707 guide covers what Texas expects of a homeowner and a contractor on the deductible. Permit rules differ between the two big cities; the permit guide sets them side by side.

Hail And Permits

The only current permit series in the metro is Fort Worth's: 473 re-roof applications filed in 2024 and 384 in 2025, through October 9, 2026. Dallas stopped updating its open file in August 2020, so there is no Dallas count to set beside recent storms. The permit index carries both files and states what each one can and cannot show.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often does it hail in Dallas-Fort Worth?
NOAA logged hail reports somewhere in the nine counties on an average of 17.6 distinct days a year from 2010 to 2025. The quietest year was 2018 with 10 days and the busiest was 2023 with 27.
Which county gets the most hail days?
Tarrant County, at 7.8 hail days a year on average, ahead of Denton (7.1), Dallas (6.3) and Collin (5.9). A hail day counts a date with at least one report in that county.
How big was the largest hail in Dallas-Fort Worth?
5.9 inches, reported at Sanger in Denton County on June 15, 2023. 377 of the 2,740 reports since 2010 (14%) were 2 inches or larger.
What was the worst hail day in the record?
By number of reports, May 27, 2024: 118 reports across Dallas, Denton, Ellis, Tarrant counties, with stones up to 3.25 inches.
When is hail season in Dallas?
Spring. March, April and May hold 63% of the 359 Dallas County reports since 2010, and April is the single busiest month with 103 reports.
Is the current year complete?
No. The newest event in the data is June 6, 2026, and the National Weather Service adds events weeks after they happen, so 2026 is always short.
Do roof replacements go up after hail?
We cannot show that from this data. Fort Worth is the only city whose permit file is current, and it counts applications filed, which fell 19% from 2024 to 2025 while metro hail days went from 26 to 21. Two series moving together or apart over a year is not evidence of cause.
